Pioneers of Heritage Tourism
February 18, 2011 · No Comments

The Rattray family, pioneers of Heritage Tourism in South Africa, offer visitors an opportunity to experience the extraordinary saga of the Anglo Zulu War. Led by the finest guides, the presentations at Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift are deeply moving holistic experiences, giving the listener an insight into the complexity of South Africa's remarkable history.
The Lodge and Guest House are set within the 2 000 hectare Fugitives’ Drift Game Reserve, which is a registered Natural Heritage Site and overlooks the battlefield of Isandlwana and is home to giraffe, plains game and numerous birds. As well as tours to the battlefields we offer horse riding, fishing, mountain biking and game walks. The Lodge houses a veritable museum of memorabilia, artefacts and relics. In a stunning setting overlooking Isandlwana and the Buffalo River, the spacious Harford Library provides a contemporary venue for lunch, parties or simply to relax.
Both the Lodge and Guest House have extremely comfortable and spacious cottages, each with a verandah. Both have swimming pools; the pool at the Lodge is surrounded by tranquil indigenous gardens. The quality of the accommodation, friendly, personal service and excellent food resulted in Tatler listing Fugitives' Drift as one of the top 101 hotels in the world.
Every person should experience this: it is a South African 'must do'

Black Rhino at Thanda Private Game Reserve
February 18, 2011 · No Comments
Every black rhino sighting, no matter how brief, always has us all very excited, but the sighting we witnessed a few evenings ago was truly spectacular. We had spotted the buffalo (Syncerus caffer), herd on a hill in the distance and had decided to make our way there to have a better look at them. As we approached we also saw a female white rhino (Ceratotherium simum), grazing with her calf, we enjoyed watching them for a while before turning our attention back to the buffalo herd.
As we watched the buffalo quietly grazing, Wilson, our tracker spotted a black rhino walking out of the dense scrub behind them. We watched as the male black rhino came out into the open area making his way slowly but surely towards the grazing buffalo. He would stop once in a while and with his ears pricked forward, listen intently to them. Then when he was about 10 metres away from the closest buffalo he started to charge them. The buffalo were momentarily alarmed and panicked; but as they all realized that it was a rhino and not a predator they just as quickly calmed down and relaxed again. The rhino, now in and amongst the herd, began feeding on the new, young nutritious leaves of various forbs, that since we have had rains are sprouting up in the grasslands. Every once in a while when the buffalo got too near him, he would stop feeding and charge the buffalo again causing one or two to scatter.
We can only presume that he was enjoying the nutritious forbs so much that he was loathe to share them with the buffalo.
